Black Friday FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why is there only one product listed on your website?

A: We know that people love a surprise. For our Black Friday though Cyber Monday event, we decided to offer only Schrödinger's Black (Friday) Boxes (2018 edition).  You can choose either a yarn or a fiber type box.  This sale will end at about 12:01 AM Eastern Time, Tuesday, November 27, 2018.

Q: What is a Schrödinger's Black (Friday) Box?

A: These boxes contain yarn or fiber (as well as some other goodies).  They are random selections from our inventory which may include unique, endangered, and extinct items.  Due to the quantum nature of these boxes we will not know what is inside until you open them and the superposition of states collapses.  We do know that these boxes will not contain any angora or mohair.

Q: Can I return a Schrödinger's Black (Friday) Box?

A: No.

Q: When can I buy your regular products again?

A: This is a limited time event.  Sales will end at about 12:01 AM Eastern Time, Tuesday, November 27, 2018.  Our regular website will return shortly after that time.

Q: How do I care for my project made from your yarn?

A: While some of our yarns and spinning fibers may be superwash and are technically machine washable, we recommend all projects be hand washed in cool water with a gentle detergent to ensure longevity.

Q: Why do the 2+ skeins of yarn I purchased in the same collection and colorway look different from each other?

A: Because we are hand dyers and dye our yarn and spinning fiber in small batches our finished products vary from batch to batch.  This is part of the beauty of a hand made product. We recommend any project that uses multiple skeins of yarn be worked in alternating rows from two skeins at a time to prevent any color pooling.

Q: I purchased a skein from you last year, can I get another to match it?

A: We do not dye in dye lots and cannot guarantee an exact match.  Yarn from the same dye pot tends to be the closest matches. We recommend buying all the yarn you would need for a project at one time, and purchasing at least one extra skein in case your gauge is larger than expected.

Q: I would like to purchase enough yarn to make a large project (sweater, blanket, etc) how can I ensure skeins of the same colorway are similar.

A: If you need a large number of skeins to match (a minimum of 4 skeins), we recommend contacting us using our contact page to set up a custom order.  Custom orders may take up to 8 weeks to fulfill.

Q: I want to make a project with specific colors, can you dye custom colorways?

A: If you would like a custom colorway created please contact us through the contact page so we can discuss minimum quantites, color matching and creation fees and licensing.

Q: What is a "Specimen"?

A: We are constantly exploring the world of color. Sometimes the results of our experiments are unpredictable.  These serendipitous results are your gain.  These rare colorways are limited to the stock on hand and cannot be reproduced.

Q: What is an "Experiment"?

A: We are constantly exploring new yarn and fiber collections. Sometimes these explorations end up in uncharted territory.  These are products that we are testing and may become permanent collections in the future.

Q: Are you on Ravelry?

A: Yes, you can find our yarn on Ravelry.  This is a great resource to see project and patterns using our yarn.

Q: Is your yarn sold in stores?

Q: Where are you located? Can I come visit?

A: We are located in Northern Virginia.  Our dye studio is closed to the public, but you can find us occasionally at Local Yarn Stores in the Greater DC area and at shows and festivals.

Q: Where can I meet The Fiberists?

A: We show annually at the Shenandoah Valley Fiber Festival.  Keep an eye on our events pageblog, twitter and facebook page for upcoming trunk shows and additional festivals.

Q: If you currently showing at a store or festival can I still buy online?

A: The simple answer is YES! When we go on the road we reduce the inventory online of what we are taking with us so that two people don't accidentally purchases the same skein of yarn or braid/bag of fiber.  So, if we are showing and you see a product listed as "Sold Out" online that may mean that we have all of our on hand stock on the road with us.  You can always contact us and we can let you know if it is really sold out, or you can check back a few days after the show and we should have the remainder of our on hand stock back up for sale.

Q: What dye do you use?

A: We use acid dyes.  We are constantly experimenting with colors from multiple dye manufacturers.

Q: Since you use acid dyes, do your products smell of vinegar?

A: No, we use a fragrance free acid solution in our dying process.

Q: Do you offer instruction?

A: We do not offer instruction at this time.  We are investigating curricula in dying, spinning and other fiber related crafts.

Q:What are your shipping options? Do you ship internationally?

A: We offer a number of options for international and domestic shipping. Please note we do not insure packages sent via first class international or domestic mail. This option is provided as a budget shipping option for our customers, but it is at their risk. We will not refund or replace items shipped via first class that are lost in transit. If you are concerned about your item reaching you we suggest choosing another shipping option.
